Recently, photos of robot waitresses surfaced on the Internet, showing them greeting diners visiting a restaurant and taking orders. The place is part of the Robot Restaurant chain and it has five humanoids that look like female human and an usher at the entrance to welcome guests.
They wear colorful scarfs around their necks and have names like Shikha, Yashwini, Janja, and Harini. The restaurant deploys an ultra-tech system through which diners can order what they want via a tablet. Then, a robot is assigned and will be dispatched when the food is ready.
The humanoids will move around on a magnetic sensor-lined mat to serve diners and the usher will answer visitor’s every inquiry, all while remember their features so that it can recognize them the next time they visit the restaurant.
According to Kailash Sunder Rajan, General Manager of franchise operations, the usher was equipped with facial recognition so that she could greet diners by their names when they revisit the restaurant, but only with diners’ permissions.
According to a blog post about the restaurant, the human staff was trained so that they can deal with any technical problem should it arises.
