Airport Deploys Facial Recognition Technology To Show Your Flight Gate

This China airport deploys facial recognition technology to help travelers check their flight status and find the way to their gate.

We have all heard different stories of China’s technological achievements and how facial recognition is being deployed in different walks of life in this country. If you wanted more proof to be convinced that China’s technology might be the best in the world, this would definitely do it. It involves a guy looking for his flight gate.

Matthew Brennan’s simple video of 22 seconds on Twitter has reached more than 1.2 million views in just a day. The video shows him doing what most of us do at the airports, trying to find our gates and catch a flight.

We all have our boarding pass (either printed or electronic one) with our flight detail on it. And we all have that moment when we frantically try to look for that flight on the monitors across the airport.

What showing in Brennan’s video proves that all this process is far less complicated in China. Brennan is seen approaching an automated information board with a giant circle in the middle, which is very much alike to the set up for Face ID on iPhone X or OnePlus 6T’s face recognition step.

A few seconds later, after the guy’s face has been scanned, all his flight information appeared on the screen, together with a detailed map showed his exact current location and which direction he needed to go to reach his flight gate.

This is an example of how convenient it would be for travelers to use face recognition at airport terminals. But how easy it would be for this wonderful technology to be misused and exploited for bad purposes?
