When you are rushing through airports, those minutes spent at the security check always seem so precious and stressful since you have to put all your electronic devices on a tray for scanning. Well, this is not going to be a problem anymore as new 3D scanning technology is here to save you time. 3D scanning can help airport staff identify items while they are still inside your bags, including electronics like mobile phones and laptops.

Ever since 2017, selected US airports have been putting the advanced 3D scanning technology into test, allowing travelers to leave objects like toiletries, mobile phones, and laptops in their luggage bags.
Bloomberg reports that 3D scanning technology or computed tomography makes 3D images of items inside a bag and automatically detect items that need to be removed.
You often need to remove your toiletries pouch or laptop from your luggage because the old scanner is a bit “dumb.” But the new scanners will know that it is a laptop, not just a piece of something made of metal and plastic.

This 3D scanner will be applied on a larger scale in the United States, with the TSA ordering 300 of these for $97 million from manufacturer Smiths Detection. This is a familiar scanner maker that you might have probably seen at Indian airports.
TSA’s head, David Pekoske, said that it would take as long as five years to replace about 2,000 old scanners with new ones at airports across the U.S. Hopefully, this advanced 3D scanner will soon make it to India airports, beginning from congested ones like Delhi and Mumbai.
