These Toilets In Tokyo Have Transparent Walls? Say What?

Many people visiting the Yogogi Fukamachi Mini Park and Haru-no-Ogawa Community Park in Tokyo will find see-through toilets.

Using a toilet with transparent walls doesn’t seem to be a good idea. However, these ones installed in Japan not only look cool and stylish, but they also solve people’s problems with public toilets.

On August 5, as part of The Tokyo Toilet project of The Nippon Foundation, many people visiting the Yogogi Fukamachi Mini Park and Haru-no-Ogawa Community Park in Tokyo will find see-through toilets.

To carry out the project, the organization worked with a number of designers that include famous Japanese designer and architect Shigeru Ban.

Ban’s idea is the toilets with transparent walls turning opaque when someone enters and the door is locked.

The Nippon Foundation states that using see-through walls can help solve two problems with public toilets: safety and hygiene. Since people can look through these walls, they could know that there is no one hiding inside and the places are clean. At night, the restrooms will light up.

At first, people were confused about these toilets but they soon understand their’s values.

The aim of The Tokyo Toilet project is to set up a total of 17 transparent washrooms in the Shibuya ward area. Anyone, regardless of age, sex, or disability, can use them comfortably.
