If you have an interest for exotic fish and feel fine when having hundreds of them looking at you while you answer the call of nature, you will probably want to visit this aquarium-inspired restroom in Akashi, Japan.
Hipopo Papa Cafe whose previous name was Mumin Papa Cafe is one of Hayashizaki Matsue Coast’s famous dating spots. But ever since its owner decided to renovate the women’s toilet, the place has become even more famous, mostly for being the first and only coffee shop in Japan, and presumably the world, to have an aquarium toilet.
Technically, the three sides of the toilet are covered by a huge aquarium full of exotic fish and a male turtle which is a bit weird considering this is a toilet for women.
Even though Hipopo Papa’s aquarium toilet has been around for more than 12 years now, it is still Akashi area’s most popular destinations for tourists. Through trial and error, the owner is said to have invested $270,000 into creating this special design, aiming to recreate the sensation you have when relieving yourself in the ocean.
While the aquarium toilet is exclusive for women, male guests can also take a visit accompanied by the staff when the shop is not too crowded.
Spending a fortune on an aquarium toilet is a costly but great way to attract customers but it also has its drawbacks. Setouchi Finder reports that some guests end up spending way more time inside the toilet just to admire the surrounding scenery. For others, some are uncomfortable to use it since they find it weird having marine creatures eyeballing them.
But if you ever pay a visit to Akashi, Japan, it is a pity if you don’t come to Hipopo Papa Cafe to know what it feels like being in an aquarium toilet.
