Indian army is the second largest in the world with 1.2 million soldiers. And if you don’t know about the army, here are 21 branches of the Indian army.

Indian army is the second largest in the world with 1.2 million soldiers. India has deployed its army in the world’s most inhospitable locations, and the soldiers have never let us down. And if you don’t know about the army, here are 21 branches of the Indian army.

1. Indian Army Armoured Corps

This is one of the Indian army’s combat arms. Not only do they fight enemies with tanks, but they also work in reconnaissance missions. It has 63 regiments including the bodyguards of the President. The Armoured Corps is among the most prestigious arms of India’s army.

In addition, there is an honorary post for a senior officer overseeing the regimental issues that concern the unit, called “Colonel of the Regiment.” Also, The Poona Horse (17 Horse), which has won two Param Vir Chakras, is Amoured Corps’ most decorated regiment.

2. Artillery

This makes up one-sixth if the Indian army, including Field Artillery and Corps of Army Air Defence. The former consists of 190 regiments, armed with rocket launchers, mortars, and guns. This is also artillery’s largest branch. The latter one is tasked with air defence under 1,524 meters. They have done a good job in Operation Meghdoot, Operation Pawan, |Operation Trident & Falcon, as well as in ‘No War No Peace’ tasks.

3. Army Aviation Corps

This branch was established in November 1986, with the duty to attack and provide logistical support. They also work in medical evacuations and combat search and rescue (CSAR).

4. Infantry

About this branch, Field Marshal Montgomery said that of all arms, this is the least spectacular branch, but we can't do anything without it. Fighting on foot, this is  that among the most critical parts in the Indian army. They claim victory by stamping their feet on the ground and raising the national flag on the captured territory.

5. Corps of Engineers

As one of the oldest branches, this one can be further divided into Combat Engineers, Military Engineering Services, and Border Roads Organisation.

The first sub-branch is responsible for providing the troops with mobility through constructing tracks and bridges as well as demolishing bridges and laying minefields to deny the enemy. It includes the Bombay Sappers, the Bengal Sappers, and the Madras Sappers.

The second sub-branch is tasked with designing, constructing, and maintaining all sorts of works namely dock installations, airfields, buildings, and they are also responsible for accessory services with the Army.

The main purpose of the Border Roads Organisation is to set up national highways, bridges, buildings, and airfields.

6. Corps of Signals

For the most part, this branch handles the Army’s military communications, working closely with the DRDO to create software and systems for the Army.

7. Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering

They are responsible for maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment’s working ability for the Indian Army. They repair from amoured vehicles to electronics, and provide the Army with engineering support.

8. Army Service Corps

Essentially, this branch takes care of supply, procurement, as well as the distribution of resources, fuels, FOL, hygiene chemicals, and hospital comfort items for the Army. Plus, in certain areas, they are responsible for postal service. The brand has successfully provided logistical support in time in very difficult situations.

Their main purpose is to maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of fighting army through providing army units with all sorts of stores including ammunition, arms, clothing, and uniform.

They treat and take care of wounded and sick animals.

This branch’s responsibility is to provide dairy products as well as fodder for the animals that the Indian Army maintained.
