PUBG is essentially a battle royale, a first-person shooter game. In PUBG, a player would kill enemies, loot, kill more enemies, and may die. And now, the creator of this game believes there’s an entirely new world to explore from PUBG.
PUBG Corporation, which developed the game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, has announced that a new development studio is being set up in California, called Striking Distance. It’s worth noting that industry veteran Glen Schofield is coming to the new studio.
Schofield co-founded another studio named Sledgehammer Games. Notably, he has also developed some other titles that you may have known. He is the co-director/producer of Call of Duty: WWII released in 2017, and he also co-directed and produced Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare as well as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. In addition, he led the team that created and developed the space horror-themed first-person shooter game called Dead Space.
Obviously, Striking Distance will be responsible for developing a new game for a world that is set in the PUBG world. There have not been any details revealed, but we’ve learned that the new game will be an “original narrative experience,” which we don’t quite get what it means. Will it be a dramatized version of a gladiator that’s constantly put into free-for-all battles like those in The Condemned or Death Race? Or will it be a prequel whose main focus is on why and how such a game was set up in the first place? Will this game have lethal frying pans? We don’t know.
At least, it appears that the PUBG Corporation has brought an expert in this area to its studio. Anyway, there hasn’t been a timeline for this development and we can tell how great a success it could achieve. PUBG became widely played due to the game mode, not because of its name, so it’s possible that Striking Distance will turn out to be a shot in the dark.
