On December 10, the event The Game Awards known as the video game industry’s Oscars is still going to take place despite the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, unlike in the previous years, there will be no guests. The event will be held in three small stages in Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo.
Six game titles that compete for the Game of the Year award are all well-deserved.
Animal Crossing: New Horizon
With the pandemic and the lockdown situation around the world, all the successful game titles in 2020 help bring people closer together by interacting in the virtual worlds. We have Fall Guys, Among Us. But one of the most successful ones is Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizon.
People who like farm managing game will definitely understand how Animal Crossing: New Horizons works. The game is simple but addictive. Players will turn themselves into cute characters who are in charge of a whole island. Want to buy any item in the game? You need to have money. And if you don’t have enough money, you can borrow it from Tom Nook and then plants and trees, grow fish to repay the debt.
The great thing about Animal Crossing: New Horizons is that players can visit their friends’ islands. Players can use DIY recipes to create pieces of furniture to decorate their house and island. And that is what makes the game exciting to play.
Doom Eternal
Doom Eternal takes players back to when the first-person shooter game was released. After the success of Doom in 2016, id Software shouldn’t have had to put in a lot of effort to create its successor, Doom Eternal.
Doom’s gameplay at that time was too perfect. There was no need to improve it any more. But id Software chose the hard way. And as a result, we have an expanded version of Eternal both in scale and in gameplay.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
FF7 Remake surprised gamers because the game was eye-catching and addictive. Director Nomura also causes controversy among the fan community when he decided to rewrite the end of FF7 Remake.
Admittedly, the ending was ambitious and dramatic, just like the way Square Enix developed the Kingdom Hearts series. But it was this ambition that started the controversy.
The biggest plus point of Final Fantasy VII Remake is probably the gameplay and graphics while the downside is its content. Since Square Enix has worked so hard to create a vast virtual world, they could have come up with more quests for players to extend their playtime, allowing them to gain more weapons, equipment, and Materia like in the original.
Ghost of Tsushima
In this game, a virtual world of Japan’s Tsushima island is recreated in the most impressive way. With its experience with the Infamous versions, Sucker Punch has created a twelfth-century background so beautiful that for every place, players would want to capture the images whether it is a bamboo forest, a reed grass, or a cliff that overlooks the setting sun.
Every shot, every frame of Ghost of Tsushima follows a single rule: cinematic. Players will feel like they are being immersed in an action movie with the main character battling against thousands of Mongols to defend the country. The sword fights with the mini-boss are shot in dramatic angles.
Ghost of Tsushima isn’t as difficult as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. But if players aren’t careful, they will be taken down by the Mongols. The gameplay is integrated closely with the gameplay.
The most important thing about Ghost of Tsushima is that it intrigues players to roam and explore the world unlock the onsen lakes to increase blood, do side quests to gain generous rewards.
Hades
Unlike the name of this game, players won’t play the god of the underworld. Instead, you will become his son, Zagreus, “the prince of darkness.”
For some reason, Zagreus wants to leave the underworld. And of course, Hades won’t let him do that. So the prince has to fight through layers of dungeons to find his way to Mount Olympus.
Zagreus will die if his blood runs out. Everything will go back to the starting point. And the procedure starts all over again.
Contrary to another Supergiant Games’ work, Bastion, Hades is quite difficult. Players will start with 50HP. And for every dungeon that you go through, you will receive a matching reward at random.
Out of blood, you will return to the starting place. All the rewards that you have collected will disappear completely.
And every time, the line of the characters around Zagreus will change, explaining the relationships between Greek gods or revealing why Zagreus wants to leave the underworld.
The Last of Us Part II
Every frame, every scene of the game is overwhelming, both in terms of scale and level of detail.
In the virtual world of each level, there will be many places where players don’t have to enter to pass the level. But they are where many precious resources are left, like alcohols, rags to bottles, homemade firebombs, or silencers.
The crafting mechanism isn’t too different from part 1. It is only optimized to better suit the characters.
What about Assasin’s Creed, Watch Dogs, and Spider-Man? You can’t blame the wrong timing. The process of selecting candidates for the award was done by judges from over 95 new sites and influencers around the world.
Votes were sent before October 29 and must be returned on November 6 or no later than November 13. And then the voting process begins.
This means to be included in the list of nominees, game titles must be released by November 20. Despite being released a week before this deadline, games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Watch Dogs: Legion, Demon’s Souls, or games released in mid-November couldn’t make it to the list. It is simply because not many gamers have played those games yet.
