The company behind the Apple Store design proposed a plan to restore the Notre-Dame’s roof and spire by replacing them with glass, just like what they do with the Apple Store. However, the glass they were talking about was structural variety, which is much stronger than regular ones. They can sustain themselves without any internal structures on the inside.
We do not know if the French authority will go for the idea or not but many people have expressed confusion of how the outcome would look like when a stone church has a glass roof. Not to mention the work to clean the glass or replace parts of it when cracks show.
Here is what Tim Kobe, the company’s founder argue:
Many people find it hard to wrap their heads around the idea of rebuilding a one-thousand-year-old church in the style of an Apple Store.
Traditionalists and purists have a lot to hate in the city even if the idea of a glass roof makes it to reality. The pyramid at the Louvre is a prime example. But the roof for the Notre Dame is a different story.
Many figures in the French authority have said that they would like the church to be restored as close to its original state as possible. Of course with something else than the centuries-old dry tinder.
However, president Macron and Prime Minister Philippe are more open to something new, especially with the spire, because it was not as old as the rest and did not have an as deep historical value. A design competition will be held and we may see lots of interesting ideas coming up.
