This 7-Ton Building 'Walks' To Its New Location With 200 Robotic Legs

The entire building literally "walks" to its new location with the help of 200 hydraulic robotic legs in the course of 18 days

Moving an entire building from one location to another is difficult and time-consuming because you will have to disassemble it piece by piece, and then assemble them again in the new location.

However, that isn’t the case anymore as engineers in China have found a way to help a whole building “walks” from place to place by pulling a really neat trick.

Shanghai is developing a new commercial district and to make way for it, an old building must be moved to a new location. The building’s unconventional shape rendered flatbeds useless and so, the engineers in charge of the project have to resort to the use of 200 hydraulic robotic legs to move it in 18 days.

The new location is only 61 meters away from the old one so 18 days sound like a lot to cover such a short distance. However, given the shape and weight of the entire building, what the engineers have pulled off is impressive.

Buildings tend to stay in one place permanently but that notion is gradually changing with many companies jumping on the bandwagon of modular construction.

Blokable, one of these startups, designs home units that we can stack to make a multi-story building once they reach the project site.

The idea behind the new structure is to reduce the negative effects of conventional construction, like noise and pollution, along with avoiding unpredictable conditions of the sites, such as unfavorable conditions.
