Since plastic has become commonly used, we have dumped vast amounts of plastic waste around our planet, so much that even the deepest, farthest point in the ocean has plastic. Sure, there have been new inventions to help us sift it out of the ocean, but then what can we do with tons of plastic waste?
Now, scientists have figured out a great idea to change plastic waste into a 100 % clean fuel so we are able to effectively reduce and recycle plastic waste.
There is so much plastic waste in the Earth
It is said that Purdue University’s researchers have come up with a chemical method to repurpose polypropylene, which is the most widely used, including for chip packets and toys. The process makes use of super-heated water to change waste plastic to useful liquid fuel quite similar to that of diesel and petrol which modern cars run on. Linda Wang, the head of research team, said in a press release:
According to the scientists, about 5 billion tonnes of the waste plastic is blocking our Earth and they estimated that around 23% of it comes from the polypropylene.
Many things are made up of polypropylene
In their scientific technique, the scientists used supercritical water, a status in which water functions as liquid and gas under extreme pressure and temperature. Then, this is added to the thermoplastic polymer - polypropylene, which turns it into oil in a few hours. Wang said:
