Previously, in the US, teachers would give students slips of paper to signify that they could leave the classroom. However, hundreds of schools around the U.S have decided to shift from using physical hall passes to the e-Hallpass app. And The Washington Post reported that this swap infuriates some parents.
At one school that is using e-Hallpass, whenever a student wants to leave the classroom, they will have to submit a request via the app. “Red flags” will be noted in the system; for example, when the same student makes requests frequently. Whether the request is approved or not depends on the teacher.
If the teacher grants the student the permission, they can leave and when they return, the teacher will log in the returning time. If the student leaves for a long period of time, the app automatically alerts an administrator so that they could check on the student.
e-Hallpass is developed by Eduspire Solutions. The application is said to be an upgrade of the traditional hall pass since it will not disrupt classrooms while stemming hall pass abuse as well as preventing violence.
But it seems like that is not enough to convince the parents. Some of them have voiced their opposition.
Brad Shear, a privacy attorney, said in an interview with WaPo that he would never allow this e-Hallpass app to be used in his kids’ schools. He continued saying that if the app is ever deployed, he will contact the PTA.
