According to Russian officials, the Sputnik V vaccine has been scheduled to be delivered in countries including India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil.
The preliminary agreements with over 10 countries have given Russia political and economic leverage.
The Wall Street Journal stated that many countries had expressed their interest and sent their requests to purchase 1.2 billion doses of vaccine.
As early as November, Russia would manufacture the vaccines overseas and circulated them globally. However, before distribution, the vaccine would need to have local regulatory approval.
Despite the skepticism from Western countries about the vaccine’s speed, Russian authorities approved the Sputnik V on August 11.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the vaccine was only tested in small-scale trials with 76 volunteers before its approval.
The result from these early trials had suggested that the shot was able to generate an immune response and was “safe to use.” However, experts warn that to determine the vaccine’s effectiveness, it is necessary to carry out large-scale testing trials.
While Russia plans to mass-vaccinate its population by the end of this year, China has already injected hundreds of thousands of its citizens with its own vaccine.
Experts have spoken about the rush to use vaccines, those that haven’t passed testing as the use of the ineffective vaccine could cause a renewed COVID-19 spread.
