Robot Police Officers Used To Patrol The Streets During Lockdown

Amid a lockdown, instead of using human officers to patrol the street, robots replace to check on residents that step out.

As the CO.VID-19 pandemic is attacking most countries around the world, many of them are on lockdown to limit the spread of the virus. However, while a lockdown order affectively requires everyone to stay inside, some violate the order and step out on the street.

To cope with this situation, Tunisia has deployed robotic police officers to question those on the street during the lockdown. These are unmanned robots patrolling the streets of Tunis on their four wheels to help enforce the 12-hour nightly curfew.

Called PGuard and made by Tunisian firm Enova Robotics, these robots are equipped with thermal imaging and infrared cameras along with a light and sound alarm system to make public announcements. When the police robots see a potential violator, they will roll up and ask the person to show their ID, which the human police officers can examine remotely. Police officers can also communicate with people through these robots thanks to the speakers can microphones. The Interior Ministry of Tunisia posted a video on Facebook to show how the robots work.

On Twitter, there’s another video showing a PGuard robot that asked a man if he knows there is a lockdown. The man then says that he is going out to buy cigarettes. The robot replies:

“OK, buy your tobacco, but be quick and go home.”

In Tunisia, the lockdown order is effective starting March 22, in which people have to stay inside between 6 PM and 6 AM, they can only leave home during the day to buy medicines and necessities.

Meanwhile, in India, the lockdown was announced from March 24 and was imposed on every part of the country. The government made the decision due to the fast-growing pandemic, which has infected many people and taken many lives. However, the lockdown order has been heavily criticized for overreaction from the police officers and the consequences it has on migrant workers who had to walk kilometers to reach home. Maybe India can make good use of these robots so that everything can go smoothly and less violently.
