The UK made an order of 40 million doses for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The nation will become the world’s first country to approve the drug for general use. In the next few days, around 800,000 doses are expected to be available in the country. And shortly thereafter, a further 10 million will arrive. About 50 hospitals around the countries are gearing up for the roll-out.
Other nations are anticipating the UK’s vaccine launch as they wait for their own regulatory approval. The vaccine is said to be 95% effective in protecting people against the novel coronavirus. However, for some countries, the approval process could take months.
Yet, on the Internet, some sellers have already listed the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for sale.
Multiple vendors were found selling doses of the vaccine on the darknet to global customers. A piece reportedly cost $1,300.
At least two vendors, when contacted by VICE, claimed that they were pharmacists and the vaccines they had were acquired through the government. They even said that they had sold it to numerous customers. According to one seller, they had a stockpile of around 560 doses.
Vendors refused to provide photographic evidence of the vaccine and proof of qualifications. Meanwhile, one of the vendors sent a high-quality stock image with a vial labeled as “Coronavirus Vaccine.”
The marketing of COVID-19 vaccines on the darknet is nothing new. They have even been advertised as early as April. As countries continue to make new records for daily new cases, demand for the vaccine is extremely high.
