VJTI is not only the oldest technology college in Mumbai but in the country as well. The school was established in 1887. And now it has just got a major tech upgrade. VJTI has just installed an advanced AI supercomputer which has a capacity of more than 1 Petaflop to not only provide relevant AI skills to students but also act as a tech incubator to assist the growth of Mumbai’s startup ecosystem.
The AI supercomputer is the result of a partnership between the college and NVIDIA. The computer is housed at the Technology Business Incubator, VJTI campus.
With the NVIDIA AI supercomputer equipped with the computational power of over 1 Petaflop and a storage capacity of over 100 terabytes, VJTI wants to offer researchers and startups the chance to make use of the supercomputer’s computational capability.
The aim is simple, according to VJTI-TBI’s project coordinator, Dr. Faruk Kazi. It is to create enabling infrastructure as well as becoming a research hub for deep learning and AI. VJTI was older than NITs and IITs of the country but due to its lack of funding to venture into fields like AI, deep learning, machine learning, cybersecurity, blockchain, etc., it was lagging behind.
It may sound strange but in India, Mumbai is third in terms of startup ecosystem size. This is why the college received a Rs 4 crore grant from the Department of Science and Technology to set up the Technology Business Incubator.
The incubator’s goal is to promote a culture of innovation in areas like cybersecurity, IoT, cloud computing, energy, and clean-tech for the startup ecosystem.
However, it is not easy to attract startups since Mumbai has a high real estate cost. But with VJTI’s legacy along with the AI supercomputing infrastructure’s availability, it hopes to unlock young Indian innovators’ potential.
Dr. Kazi also emphasized the importance of equipping and professionals with skills through AI courses. Students have already had knowledge about the application of AI. Dr. Kazi mentioned an AI Deepfakes video from his students which shows the face of Alibaba founder Jack Ma instead of Amir Khan in a scene from the Three Idiots movie.
VJTI has already signed with firms like Emerson, L&T Infotech and many more for specific AI projects. Moreover, the setup is being used for training, educating and testing different government ministries’ ideas.
At VJTI-TBI, startups can have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities which would be useful for product development as well as rapid prototyping. VJTI’s tech incubators, as a technology solution provider, is aligned with the vision of NVIDIA, to partner with the country’s leading research institutions to boost their computational capability, as stated by Vishal Dhupar, NVIDIA South Asia’s Managing Director.
