To handle this issue, automobile manufacturers all over the world have consumed much effort and time to improve the durability of automobile paint, plastic parts, and interior trim ones out of the ultraviolet rays.
Nissan has made a test with the Xenon Weather Ometer (XWO) under a mega-powerful light. The device has many similarities with a tanning bed; however, it is used to test the weatherability of cars’ materials.
The Xenon Weather Ometer is located on Nissan’s technical center in Farmington Hills, Michigan. With a 4000W xenon lamp, the XWO can create the wavelengths similar to those of the sun. The different point is that these wavelengths are controlled to shine all day without some factors like at night or cloudy days.
In other words, the time the XWO spent on the test was halved compared to the common test time. As such, if the manufacturer planned to make a paint test under the exposure to sunlight during 365 days, the XWO would take only 06 months to do this test.
Considering the prominent advantages of this device, they include handling up to 100 samples of materials each time, and hence, it can save time to test new kinds of automobile paint, plastics, as well as other elements that are designed specifically for new cars.
These samples revolve on the lamp to imitate the sun’s movement around a car in 24 hours continuously. During this process, engineers from Nissan keep experimenting on new materials and colors under the real rays of the sun. Of course, with the support of the XWO, the Japanese brand can complete the test much sooner.
Doug Prytula, a technician to test chassis and body of Nissan products, stated that the XWO didn’t only help them to make strict tests in the real world, but it is also used to set up rough environments.
