To put an end to the dependence on single-use plastics of the world, TerraCycle, a recycling company has come up with a plan.
On Thursday, at the World Economic Forum, the company presented its idea on Loop, a delivery service which is friendly to the environment. The service is expected to create a change in the retail industry. And it has already received support from some of the biggest consumer brands in the world.
Loop is not completely different from Amazon. As with Loop, customers will still visit a website, order something they want and TerraCycle will be in charge of delivering the goods.
Instead of putting products like Tide laundry detergent or Pantene shampoo inside huge cardboard boxes, the company decided to use reusable packaging and to deliver the goods in a tote bag via UPS.
After a customer finishes using a product, they can put the empty package back inside the tote and set the schedule for a free pick-up. The tote is collected by UPS and returned to Loop. The company will then clean all the packaging, refill, recycle and reuse it.
Moreover, if the product belongs to a subscription plan, the customer won’t have to wait for their monthly delivery as a refilled container will be sent immediately back them.
TerraCycle has already succeeded in gaining well-known partners which include PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble, Nestle, and Unilever. The Loop pilot projects are scheduled to take place first in New York and Paris in May, and soon in London later this year. The company hopes to launch the projects in San Francisco, Tokyo, and Toronto in 2020.
For those who are interested in trying Loop, they can visit the website and sign up on their waitlist. If the project is successful as planned, it could cut down the amount of plastic that is hurting our health and damaging our environment. Moreover, the project will also provide shoppers with an additional level of convenience.
