Experts and health officials are baffled by a mysterious illness in Andhra Pradesh that has led to 500 people being hospitalized and took the life of one.

The illness was detected on Saturday in Eluru – a city known for its hand-woven merchandise. According to Geeta Prasadini – director of public health, victims of the illness started to convulse with no warning.

546 patients were taken to the hospital and they showed other symptoms like loss of consciousness, anxiety, and nausea. Many of them have made a full recovery and being discharged. According to Dasari Nagarjuna – a spokesperson of the government, 148 patients are still being treated.

Experts from the top scientific institutes of India have arrived and investigated the strange illness. Different theories have been put forward, including food contamination by pesticides. However, nobody knew what it was, said Prasadini.

What are confusing experts is that there aren’t seem to be any connection among those who have fallen ill. They are of different age group, with few are elderly and 70 children, they live in different areas and all of them tested negative for COVID-19.

Chief Minister’s office ruled out the theory of contaminated water as some of the patients didn’t use the municipal water supply. They have also taken water samples and nothing suspicious was found.

According to Prasadini, a 45-year-old male patient died on Sunday with symptoms that resemble epilepsy. However, his autopsy didn’t reveal much.

Experts are testing a hypothesis that people who fell sick ate vegetables containing phosphorus from pesticides. However, this is just an assumption based on the common use of such pesticides in the area.

Andhra Pradesh is one of India’s worst victims of COVID-19, with more than 800,000 cases detected. The healthcare system of the state has been crippled by the pandemic.
