A new study suggests that since the Coronavirus can live longer in testicles, most men are prone to more severe cases of the disease. The time it takes for male patients to recover is also longer than that of the female.
The researchers monitored the recovery of 68 Mumbai-based patients to determine the role gender plays in how the cases turn out to be. So far, many studies have suggested that men tend to suffer more from CO.VID-19.
According to Dr. Aditi Shastri, a Montefiore Medical Center’s oncologist, and Dr. Jayanthi Shastri, a Mumbai-based Kasturba Hospital for Infectious Diseases’ microbiologist, the Coronavirus attaches to a type of protein that appears in a high level in men’s testicles.
The name of this protein is ACE2 (short for angiotensin-converting enzyme 2). It is present in the gastrointestinal tract, the lungs, and at a large amount in the testicles.
What makes the situation worse for men is the fact that testicles are walled off from their immune system, so the virus can linger there longer than usual.
The researchers said that this might be one of the reasons why women recover faster from the illness than men do.
Their report also reveals the average time for men and women to return to health, which is four days for female patients and six days for males.
The authors wrote that the observation showed male patients suffer from a delay in viral clearance as the testicles might serve as reservoirs for the Coronavirus.
This study justifies reports from South Korea, Italy, and New York City which show men are d.y.i.n.g at a larger number than women.
Some other studies have suggested since men are more likely to smoke and suffer from coronary artery disease and high blood pressure, they are more vulnerable to the disease.
