It’s been almost half of the year and we should have all got used to wearing a face mask by now, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are still not wearing a mask, you should start because this routine will likely go on through the rest of 2020 and even into 2021.
Now, one of the problems with wearing face masks is that it blocks the air and makes it harder to breathe for some. Trying to solve this problem, a YouTuber has created a custom mask that opens automatically when there’s no one around to let fresh air in so you can breathe.
However, the mask will make you look like a villain from the Batman film.
The internet is getting crazy over a face mask that could open through a sensor detecting the presence of other people or a manual trigger. The mask would let its wearer drink, eat, or breather easily while not having to remove it from their face, practicing social distancing perfectly. The mask works well, but if you’re not into a scary look that may catch others’ attention, consider carefully.
The mask houses a bunch of components including batteries, wires, an Adruino Nano, servos, PIR sensors, hinges, LED lighting, all of which are mounted to a 3D-printed structure. There’s a flap on the front of the mask, controlled by infrared sensors, for detecting higher emission levels, presumably from a person nearby. At sensing that, the flap will close automatically.
Though the mask works on paper as a perfect solution, there remain challenges. For example, the sensors have false-positive readings and shut the mask on its own, interrupting whatever you’re doing like eating or breathing. Nevertheless, it’s still worth giving a try, protecting yourself while looking impressive (and intimidating), why not?
