On New Year’s Day, January 1, 2021, Tesla officially announced the launch of the made-in-China Model Y, with prices ranging from 339,900 to 369,900 yuan ($52,579 to $57,210).
Right after the announcement, the number of orders for Tesla’s Chinese Model Y was said to exceed 100,000 units within just 10 hours. The number of people visiting Tesla’s website soared, causing the site to be temporarily shut down.
Tesla had to post a notice on its Weibo account, urging Chinese customers to be patient. It is reported that the new cars will be delivered in January 2021.
The made-in-China Model Y has the same front design as the international version. However, the rear design is more similar to the Model 3 and has the Chinese text logo.
In terms of performance, this car is equipped with a 431 horsepower engine with an all-wheel drive system. There are two versions: one is a long-range version while the other is a performance version. The long-range version can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 5.1 seconds. The performance version takes 3.7 seconds. The range per charge is 594km for the long-range version and 480km for the performance one.
Following its success in 2020, Tesla has created a new electric car craze. However, the next step for Tesla would be to ensure the quality of production and delivery time for this huge number of orders.
