Lok Sabha Elections 2019 Will Get Votes From 90% Of First-Time Voters, Twitter Reports

On Wednesday, Twitter India released a survey result ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections. Accordingly, among first-time eligible voters, 90 percent are likely to vote in the coming election days. The Election Commission says that, during the seven-phase election which begins on April 11, almost 1.5 crore voters will exercise their voting right.

As stated by Twitter India, 70 percent of India’s first-time eligible voters think that by posting on the platform, they are making a contribution to the public debate. Meanwhile, almost five out of ten first-time voters may actively engage with as well as raise concerns to the Indian government on what affects them or their communities, as opposed to 36 percent of people who are not on Twitter.

Twitter carried out this survey as part of #PowerOf18, its youth engagement initiative. About 54.6 of respondents said they would use the platform to gain support for a movement or a cause while 54.4 percent replied that they will use Twitter to get their opinion heard.

In addition, more than 80 percent of those responding to the survey would choose Twitter to update about the events in India as well as across the globe. The survey covered both Twitter users and non-users with a total of 1,602 young people whose ages range from 18 to 22 years old.

Last week, Twitter, Facebook, and other social platforms agreed to remove election-related content within three hours under the request of the Election Commission during the last 48 hours before official voting days.

According to an official statement, the agreement was reached by Internet companies and the Election Commission, which complies with the Voluntary Code of Ethics for the Lok Sabha Elections. The Elections will start on April 11 and last through May 19, 2019, and this is the 17th Lok Sabha. The vote counting process will take place on May 23 and the result will come out that same day.
