Like An Apocalyptic Movie: Swarms Of Locusts Invaded India

2020 is a horrible year. And this has been proved in the first five months of the year. Amid the COVID-19 outbreak and after the attack of Cyclone Amphan, India finds itself in another battle against locust swarms. And it is like a scene in an apocalyptic movie.

Locust swarms have invaded the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh. And on their journeys, they have destroyed trees and crops. These swarms came from Pakistan’s Balochistan and Iran.

The attack has wiped out 5,00,000-hectare crops in Rajasthan. The state’s battle with the locusts has been going on for more than three months now. Photos and videos of the attack of the locus have been making rounds on social media.

In Jaipur, because the locusts couldn't find a lot of crops, they moved to attack the trees instead.

The pictures and videos are like from an apocalyptic movie. And people couldn’t stop thinking about whether 2020 get any scarier.

In one video, the locust can be seen sitting on one house’s roof. There are so many of them that it is difficult to get a glimpse of the ground underneath. We can only see the ground after they already fly away.

As per a locust forecasting officer at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, this is India’s worst locust attack in 27 years.

After 1962, India had not experienced any full-blown locust cycles. However, in 1978 and 1993, experts observed large-scale upsurges.

Locusts are usually unharmful, but when they are increased in number, it becomes uncontrollable. They start attacking and destroying crops.
