If you are a fan of chicken nuggets, you might want to try KFC’s new idea which is 3D-printing chicken, a project it collaborates with Russia-based 3D Printing Solutions to make possible.
KFC said this was the first step in creating meat of the future, starting with lab-made chicken nuggets. Whether you and other diners find that appetizing is another question.
This is by far the first ever chicken nuggets to be lab-made and according to the fast-food chain, it will taste and look just like what made with real chicken. This method is believed to be more environmentally friendly than the traditional method.
According to KFC’s press release, 3D Bioprinting Solutions is looking into the possibility of using plant and chicken cells to develop additive bioprinting technology. If they succeed with this endeavor, we will have 3D-printed meat that has the texture and taste of real chicken.
The best part of this idea is diners still benefit from the usual micronutrients they get from consuming real chicken without the additives used in agriculture and farming.
Apart from being healthier, the method is also more ethical as we no longer have to kill chicken for their meat.
According to a study of the American Environmental Science & Technology Journal, 3D-printing meat will cut greenhouse gas emissions 25 times and save more than half of the energy needed. We will also need 100 times less land than the traditional way.
The growing trend of 3D-printing meat started with Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat. These products have already been on supermarket shelves and in fast food chains.
With this trend growing strong due to the ethical cause and health benefits, KFC decided to jump on the bandwagon with its own 3D-printed chicken nuggets.
However, what makes this project different is the fact that KFC wants to use both meat and plant cells.
Beyond Meat and Impossible Food’s products are 100% plant-based so if you love the idea of tasting meat but not actually eat meat, do some research before indulging in these chicken nuggets.
While the lab takes care of everything scientific, KFC will provide them with its signature breading and spices to retain the original taste of the nuggets.
KFC said the final product will make it out in fall this year in 2020. However, it said nothing on when the chicken nuggets will be available in other countries.
