Jeff Bezos, founder, and CEO, recently posted on Instagram an update on an engine that will power the next human mission to the Moon of NASA.
The engine is being developed by Blue Origin, Bezos’ aerospace firm. It is supposed to participate in the mission to take the first woman to the Moon.
In his post, Bezos showed off the lander engine. Called BE-7, it is said to be a high-performance lunar landing engine that has 10,000 lbf of thrust. This can be throttled down to 2,000 lbf, delivering a precise landing on the surface of the Moon.
The video also showcases a test carried out at NASA Marshall earlier this week. Bezos explained in the post that the cumulative test time was 1,245 seconds.
The landing engine will join the National Team HLS lunar lander of Blue Origin, which will be a part of NASA’s Moon mission called Artemis. The ultimate goal is to set up a human base there that can be the initiation point for other deep space missions in the future.
Back in September, the phase-1 plans were already outlined by NASA. The aim is to bring the first woman along with the next man to the Moon in 2024. The US space agency already updates on the Space Launch System, its new rocket, which will take part in its future space missions.
Before the crewed mission, the SLS rocket and the Orion spacecraft will be tested in an unmanned mission next year.
