For the first time in history, Jammu and Kashmir use drones to ask people to stay home while the union territory is now being lockdown to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This idea seems to be inspired by China, which also deployed drones during lockdown to track those wander outside and ask them to go back.
As of yesterday, the union territory has seen a total of four confirmed cases, one in Srinagar and three in Jammu.
The case in Srinagar is a woman returned from Saudi Arabia. In answer to the new case, the J&K administration announced restrictions on some of its districts. But on Sunday, as the 21-day complete lockdown was announced, the whole territory complies, and now it is under the same restriction as many other states in India.
In Srinagar, the drones broadcast the police’s recording asking people to cooperate with the government and stay inside.
This exercise starts in Lal Chowk and now it has spread to the downtown area. A senior police officer said that the downtown was the priority because of its large population. The drones are now being deployed across Srinagar.
On the first day of the lockdown, the police noticed movements in Gaw Kadal and in answer, they flew the drones and played the announcements. They said that the devices allowed them to cover a larger area in a shorter time.
In addition to using drones, the police will distribute pamphlets to raise awareness about the Co.ro.na.vi.rus.
