On January 10, many people were shocked to find out that the official website of WHO (short for World Health Organization) shows Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in a different shade to the rest of India, implying that the region is a separate country.
The map is part of the COVID-19 tally dashboard. While the rest of India is depicted in blue, Jammu & Kashmir is grey and the part of territory China is currently occupying is in a strip with blue and grey color.

Twitter Geotags Jammu & Kashmir As Part Of China
Earlier this year, Twitter was under criticism in India for showing Jammu & Kashmir as part of China. Nitin Gokhale – a National Security Analyst noticed when he was near Leh airport that Twitter’s geotag displayed 'Jammu and Kashmir, People's Republic of China'.
After the incident was made public, Kanchan Gupta – chairman of Observer Research Foundation took to Twitter to raise awareness about the problem and said that several other users had run into the same issue.
Later, the Parliamentary Committee on IT demanded an explanation from Twitter which issued an official apology for the mistake.
It’s illegal to misrepresent India’s national symbol or maps. The year 2020 also saw several Chines apps banned in India for posing a threat to national security.
Chinese tech giant Xiaomi was under fire for not displaying weather for Arunachal Pradesh. After receiving a slew of complaints from users, Xiaomi explained that its weather app couldn’t understand the needed data for many regions and that the company had to rely on third-party data.
