Israel's Most Secretive Military Unit Exposed Itself To Fight Off COVID-19

Unit 81 is one of the most hidden military intelligence units of Israel charged with technology developing to help in combat. However, recently, as COVID-19 outbreak spreads all over the world, Unit 81 has to break its cover to make public its work in warding off the Coronavirus.

A senior intelligence officer of Unit 81 said that it was their mission to do whatever it takes to solve the most pressing problem the world is now facing. He also shared that the unit would make the results of its research public online.

Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a state of emergency to fight off COVID-19, an invisible enemy. Last week, the country started to harness cyber tools to identify infected citizens, marking the first time in history such technology is used on civilians.

On March 19, Netanyahu said that the new emergency regulations were not recommendation nor request, but they were orders.

The Israel Defense Forces has announced that Unit 81 would help with medical challenges in the fight against the Coronavirus outbreak. The innovation team will work to find solutions with their military experience.

For now, the unit is working to convert BiPAP home ventilator units to help with the ones for professional purposes in hospitals, preparing for a surge in the number of patients requiring this kind of treatment.

Another project Unit 81 is working on is to control the airflow in hospital rooms when patients are admitted to ensure that the rooms are not exposed to the air infected patients emit.

A similar system for ambulances are also under development by Unit 81. This research started as finding a way to protect military drivers from being infected by soldiers who have fell ill.

Unit 81 called the tech “shields,” which protect the driver cabs from the rest of the vehicle, creating a contain environment.

According to Unit 81, the tech was well-received by those out in the field, and they planned to equip 150 ambulances with the system in the upcoming weeks.

Another project is the development of face masks. The unit plans to manufacture more than 1,000 masks each day and distribute them to paramedics, doctors, and nurses all over the country.

If that was not enough, a software that can store and analyze patients’ information is also undergoing development. The system has the potential to help health officials make sense of what is happening and how to best combat the pandemic.
