Reddit Is Said To Be Blocked In India By ISPs And Telecom Operators

Several internet service providers and telecom operators have banned Reddit while having no reason.

Indian internet users have claimed that they could not access to Reddit website. As reported by users' threads on the forum and some local media reports, this accessing breakdown is not caused by a server downtime as some recent cases of Facebook or Instagram. Several Reddit users spread the rumor that most major internet providers (ISPs) in India are blocking the popular social website without announcement.

According to a MediaNama report, not only internet providers such as You Broadband, Jio Gigafiber but also telecom companies such as Vodafone and Jio have expanded the Reddit block in dozens of states in India. In addition, there are many posts on r/India category showing that the site has been unavailable. A number of Redditors have reported this issue and even called out the internet providers, who were deliberately enforcing site blocking on other social networks platform such as Twitter.

An ISP company named Hathway had banned Reddit last week, but it's available to reconnect to the site a few hours later. Several Redditors complained about the blocking, which the company gave no reasons for why it was not worked. For your information, Hathway is a subsidiary of the giant Jio for a while.

This seems to be quite bizarre, while India’s ban on porn contents last year have been verified by rulers. This blockage is certainly unexplained why ISPs were disrupting the service as there have been no official orders from Indian authorities or government.

Users can still access blocking sites via proxies or VPN while the internet providers block them in any regions. While we were reading this post, many Indian internet users were able to access Reddit again, but there's still no explanation from internet providing operators on why they tried to disable connecting to Reddit in the first place.
