Instagram Is Setting Up New Rules For Banning Accounts

Facebook-owned Instagram is revealed to be working on a new policy for account removals to make its platform a safer environment.

Less than one week after Instagram implemented a ban on  Alex Jones as well as other far-right extremists, the company is currently setting up new policies to remove accounts. These guidelines will soon be applied and play an important role in helping Instagram identify which accounts should be removed from its platform.

The platform blocked the account of Alex Jones, an extremist on violence.

At the moment, Instagram uses a policy, which before a decision on banning someone been made, allow a specific percentage of violations to stay in a certain time frame. However, according to the company, this policy brought leniency to many abusers who post regularly. The more people post, the more leniency for violating posts, which need to be fixed.

Therefore, the social media network believes that it is necessary to create new policies for account management on its platform. After a certain amount of violations and a certain time frame, accounts will be taken down.

This policy will apply to everyone regardless of whether they post regularly on Instagram or not. The company did not publish the exact window of time and number of strikes.

The company thinks that the new guidelines will ensure consistent implementation of community rules. However, whether or not this really works, we will need to wait and see.

Moreover, users will quickly be allowed to appeal the post has been removed in the application itself. This is one of the actions that contribute to a safer Instagram platform.

Back in March, Facebook also announced that they will ban white nationalist and separatist content from the platform. However, in contrast to what it said, a month after the New Zealand attack, shootings videos are still available on both Instagram and Facebook.
