The COVID-19 is still looming over the whole world with governments trying their best to contain the spread of the virus.
While people in urban areas can easily get medical attention if something went wrong, people who are residing in rural areas aren’t that lucky. Modern healthcare isn’t available while there is a lack of necessary equipment and personnel. So to transport patients in such areas, the Indian Navy has come up with a smart evacuation pod.
The pod has reportedly been indigenously designed right in India by the Indian Navy and is called the Air Evacuation Pod (AEP). It is a sealed glass capsule that can fit one patient while preventing the risk of anybody else getting infecting in transit. Therefore, there is no need to disinfect the entire aircraft, saving money and time.
The AEP is designed with the guidance of the INS Garuda naval air station’s Principal Medial Officer and the consultation of Southern Naval Command headquarters and naval hospital INHS Sanjivani.
The Indian Navy makes the whole contraption using perspex, nitrile rubber, and aluminum. The weight of the transfer pod is just 32 kilograms. And one of the best things about this pod is that it only costs Rs 50,000 while the imported one cost Rs 59 lakhs, which is way more expensive.
Trials of the AEP with patients inside were successfully carried out at the Southern Naval Command onboard Dornier aircraft and Advanced Light Helicopter of the Indian Navy on April 8. The Indian Navy will distribute twelve AEPs across Eastern, Western, Southern, and Nicobar and Andaman Naval Commands.
