Today, the Union Cabinet gave the approval to fund an ambitious space mission that will be launched in 2022. India is going to send the first manned mission in its history into space, the Gaganyaan – as it’s called – will make our country the fourth one to do this. You may be wondering how much money is funded for this space flight? The answer is Rs 10,000 crores.
Sitanshu, the spokesperson for the government, posted on Twitter that it takes a huge amount of money to develop as well as build the technology, infrastructure, flight hardware, and the computer systems required for the mission.
The “Vyomnaut” (in Sanskrit, it means space) crew that will go on this mission includes three members. During his address earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the mission is planned to stay outer space for at least a week. With the Gaganyaan, India will become the fourth country in the world to bring human beings into space, after the success of Russia, the United States, and China. The launch will take place in Andhra Pradesh, at the Sriharikota spaceport.
However, there will be tests before the official launch of the mission, involving two manned space flights. The first test flight is likely to take off by 2020.
In the official launch, the three-stage rocket GSLV Mk III will be responsible for lifting Gaganyaan off the Earth. This will also be a collaboration of the Indian Space Research Organisation and other agencies of the country.
Dr. K Sivan, the chairman at ISRO, stated that this mission is an extremely challenging plan, but the space agency will do it.
