A new report suggested that India’s overall data traffic saw a 47% increase in 2019. On average, an Indian consumed 11GB of data per month.
Of the country’s total consumed data traffic, 4G accounted for 96% while there was a 30% decrease in 3G data traffic.
Nokia’s Senior Vice President and Head of India Market, Sanjay Malik, said that subscribers’ migration to 4G would drive the country’s broadband growth. And the Indian telecom companies would need to take into account other connectivity solutions to take on new opportunities and deal with the growing data consumption.

It was the increasing number of OTT (over-the-top) platforms that fueled video consumption. At the moment, there are more thang 30 platforms in the country with easy access to regional content, competitive distribution innovations and strategies such as mobile-only packs and sachet pricing.
On average, an Indian spent 70 minutes per day on OTT platforms.
Malik added that the upcoming Industry 4.0 solutions and 4K/8K videos would enhance productivity as well as lowering the costs for the industries in different verticals, requiring high speed and low latency.
More 4G network upgrades along with affordable smartphones, low data prices and videos becoming more popular fueled the growth of the average data usage monthly to 16%.
The number of 4G devices reached 501 million units thanks to a diversity of feature-rich models with competitive prices.
And from 2015 to 2019, India data traffic had a recorded growth of 44 times, which is one the world’s highest.
