India is setting the foundations for what could be the largest hybrid renewable energy park in the world. The megapark is built to create 30 gigawatts of electricity, according to Agence France Presse.
Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, laid the first foundation stone last Tuesday. Modi said that the park would help the country drive down the amount of emitted carbon dioxide by as much as 50 million tons per year.
The megapark will be built in the Kutch region, Gujarat, over an area of 72,600 hectares. This is equivalent to the total area of Singapore. Inside the park, there will be solar energy storage units, solar panels, as well as windmills. The hybrid energy park belongs to a bigger project that includes a desalination plant, along with a fully automated packing and milk processing plant.
Accordingly, the desalination will have a processing capacity of 100 million liters of water per day, which is enough for about 800,000 people who are living in the dry area. PM Modi said that this will be the world’s largest hybrid renewable energy park, which will produce 30,000 gigawatts of power. He added:
“Energy security and water security are vital in the 21st century. The two major projects of the renewable energy park and the desalination plant inaugurated today in Kutch are steps towards achieving the two.”
India has a plan to generate 175 GW of renewable energy in the next 2 years and produce 450 GW by 2030. Apart from that, the country also aims at reducing an amount of 50 million tons of CO2 per year.
