India Has Reached Solar Power Target 4 Years Ahead Of Schedule

As a part of an initiative, India has already achieved the milestones of achieving 20GW of solar power by 2022 four years ahead of schedule.

A few years ago, the Indian government set a goal to use solar power to generate a certain percentage of the energy requirements of the country.

Now, according to DST or the Department of Science and Technology, the country has hit the milestone 4 years ahead of schedule.

The move belongs to an initiative that aims to reduce climate change’s effects by achieving 20GW of solar power by 2022. According to Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, DST Climate Change Program’s Adviser and Head, the target has already been reached back in January 2018.

India has now set a new target of achieving 100 GW of solar power by 2022.

When it comes to the battle against climate change, India may not be the worst offenders, but the country is surely one of the most affected. So that is the reason DST wants to tackle the problem before it is too late.

The effects can already be felt. The temperatures have been going up, even in the Himalayas. Summer lasts longer. Gupta warned that northeastern states such as Mizoram and Assam will experience the worst for the coming years.

He points out that in fact, climate change can lead to not only the terrible temperature in Assam but also the collapse of its economy.

However, with various initiatives commences made by the Central government, the emission intensity of the country in the period from 2005 to 2010 has declined 12 percent.

With renewable sources accounted for 34.6% of the total power capacity, India is one of the world’s largest producer of energy using renewable sources. The country’s wind power capacity is 36,625MW while its hydro installed capacity is 45GW.
