Hospital workers have reportedly started making their own masks using supplies they bought from craft stores. This is an example of how health workers across the globe are making use of their creativity in struggling the lack of essential medical supplies as the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, on Tuesday, staff at Providence St. Joseph Health hospital, Washington, US, volunteered to make personal protective equipment (PPE) such as surgical masks and face shields using supplies they bought from craft stores. The hospital’s chief quality officer says that the face shields will protect wearers from splatter and spray.
Since its outbreak, COVID-19 has resulted in shortages of essential medical supplies around the world, like ventilators and facemasks. Acknowledging the situation, people over the internet have been helping in different ways. Some people designed ventilators that could be 3D-printed and posted their plans online. Meanwhile, others designed valves as well as other important components for the machines. Some hospitals in Italy are even helped with 3D-printing some parts as there are more and more patients.


In another instance, a 13YO girl in Japan has made 612 masks and donated them to old people and those in need. She did this out of her own saved up money.
As of today, the number of COVID-19 cases worldwide has passed the 200,000-case mark, reaching over 218,800 cases. The pandemic has also killed 8,810 people. Confirmed cases in India have increased quite fast, reaching 169 confirmed and 3 deaths. After breaking out in China then South Korea, COVID-19 has severely attacked Iran, Italy, and the US. The tragic situation has revealed sad stories about empty stores and people stocking necessities at their homes, but it has also brought us heart-warming acts, giving us more hope to get by the difficult time.
