Recently, hackers have been targeting the digital data of WHO (World Health Organization), Gates Foundation, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and other institutes relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thousands of documents, passwords, and emails have been exposed on the Internet.
As stated by SITE Intelligence Group, which keeps track on terror groups, the hackers had leaked approximately 25,000 email addresses along with passwords of the organizations working to fight off COVID-19.
Screenshots of emails, passwords, and documents were made public on Twitter on Sunday and Monday.
According to SITE, the NIH (short for National Institute of Health) takes the biggest hit in this attack with 9,938 leaked passwords and emails. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has 6,857 emails and their passwords leaked online while the figures for the World Bank and WHO are 5,120 and 2,732 respectively.
Other victims of this attack are the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the Gates Foundation, the philanthropic organization of Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder.
SITE was unable to prove if the passwords and emails are authentic. However, Robert Potter, an Australia-based cybersecurity expert claimed that those of WHO were real.
To make matters worse, Executive Director of SITE, Rita Katz shared white supremacists and Neo-Nazis were exploiting these leaked information and shared them on their venues.
