Japan may evoke images of many things, from food, anime, to robots. The country is no short of industrial models but what is drawing attention now is something taken straight from sci-fi movies.
Of all the robots Japanese creatives have ever come up with, the Gundam of Yoshiyuki Tomino is by far the most famous. In Yokohama, an 18-meter Gundam robot is now under construction. The best part is, it will be able to “walk.”
Walking here is in the sense that the robot can shuffle its feet and that is it. You cannot expect more than that from a Gundam that weighs 25 tons. That ability is more than enough to excite fans and pull in curious onlookers. Even if the Gundam cannot do anything, its sheer huge form is hard to miss, even from a distance.
The model that is being constructed in Gundam Factory Yokohama is the RX-78-2. In charge of this project is Masaki Kawahara, the designer who has had three other gigantic Gundam in his portfolio.
The robot will come equipped with the Gundam Carrier, which is supposed to move the Gundam in and out of its dock, as well as provide power when the Gundam moves. To give the public a bit of excitement, the factory has made a model of the robot at the scale of 1/30. It will also give a general idea of how big the real one will be.
The project is far from 50% completed, making the deadline in October this year seems to be too unrealistic. Visitors will be able to see the robot in action until the third of October, 2021.
However, after that, we have no idea what will happen to the Gundam robot.
