Gita Ramjee, a world-famous Indian-origin virologist, has recently passed away in South Africa from COVID-19 complications

Gita Ramjee, a world-famous Indian-origin virologist, has recently passed away in South Africa from COVID-19 complications. She is one of the five deaths from the novel Coronavirus in the country.

Ramjee was a prominent vaccine scientist and researcher in HIV prevention. She returned from London a week before her death but showed no symptoms of the disease at all.

The 64-year-old virologist was the Unit Director and Clinical Trials Unit Principal Investigator of SAMRC (short for HIV Prevention Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council).

Back in 2018, she was awarded the Outstanding Female Scientist Award by the EDCTP (short for European Development Clinical Trials Partnerships) for her contribution to finding ways to prevent HIV.

Gita Ramjee’s husband, Pravin Ramjee, a pharmacist, is also an Indian descendent.

Details of her funeral have not been announced as South Africa is currently under a 21-day lockdown so attendance of funerals requires permits.

Gita Ramjee was one of the five people in South Africa to die of COVID-19 so far. On Tuesday, the country’s government made public that it would double the number of people going door to door to test people for the novel COVID-19 pandemic. The focus of this move is the Black townships founded in the apartheid era.

On Sunday, Cyril Ramaphosa, president of South Africa urged thousands of people to take the lockdown seriously in a national broadcast.

According to data from John Hopkins University, the death toll from COVID-19 has reached 41,654 and more than 850,580 people have been infected.
