A group of doctors has posed n.a.k.e.d in an effort to draw attention to the lack of protective equipment and clothing. In the protest dubbed Naked Qualms in Germany, the group members said that they felt at risk of getting infected with CO.VID-19. They also claimed that they have been calling for help for several months but their calls have been unheeded.
According to group General Practitioner Ruben Bernau, he and his team had insufficient equipment to deal with the pandemic. He added that the nude photos represent their vulnerability without protection against the virus.
The doctors posed and took pictures, covering parts of their bodies with files, medical equipment, toilet rolls, and prescription blocks.
Another GP Christian Rechtenwald said that they were inspired by a French doctor who also posed naked in his practice. The French doctor described himself as colleagues as “cannon fodder” in the fight against CO.VID-19.
In addition, another GP Jana Huseman said that of course doctors want to keep treating patients that need close examination but they need proper PPE. Meanwhile, another doctor stressed that she was trained to sew up wounds, not her own face masks.
Since the pandemic spread to the country in late January, doctors in Germany have been asking for more PPE. German companies making protective clothing have increased their production capacities but fail to catch up with the huge demand. Care homes, clinics, and medical practices have frequently requested for aprons, gloves, goggles, and filter masks, but say that their needs haven’t been met.
At the same time, medical workers have reported multiple thefts of masks and disinfectants from hospitals, which the police have blamed on organized criminal gangs. Therefore, several hospitals have to increase their security.
In a recent study, a German health insurer association found that doctors were short of over 100 million single-use masks, nearly 50 million filter masks, as well as over 60 million single-use aprons, along with disposable gloves.
