Over the years, esports has become so popular around the world with many players working their best to become the champion. But many of them are also ignoring the impacts on their health. According to researchers, even with simple games that keep players away from physical injuries, they can still suffer from serious damages to their bodies, which they tend to ignore.
As stated by New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic’s director of sports medicine Hallie Zwibel, as players sit still while playing esports, they suffer from over-use injuries just like other athletes; worse, they also face huge health concerns resulting from the nature of such games, they have to sit all the time.
Zwibel says that from research findings, 56% of esports players have eye fatigue, 42% of them suffer from pains in their back and neck while 36% of players have their wrists hurt and 32% have pain in their hand. However, just 2% of these issues are reported as well as receive treatment. He adds that 40% of them are not physically active.
The study’s authors noted a lot of health problems like blurred vision, carpal tunnel syndrome, poor posture, and body pain. In addition, they have reportedly experienced metabolic dysregulation because of the constant consumption of sugary drinks and caffeine as well as minimal activity. They also suffer from mental issues such as depression and anxiety due to internet gaming disorder.
According to Zwibel, the influence of esports on players' physical and mental health has just been brought to light. And esports players need physicians, physical therapists, and trainers to help them in optimizing their performance while maintaining long-term health.
It’s crucial that players keep their health in check while breaks and basic exercises can help a lot.
