The drastic measures imposed during the COVID-19 outbreak by China have slashed air pollution. Assistant Professor Marshal Burke at the Department of Earth System Science, Stanford, said that at least 50,000 to 75,000 could be saved from dying prematurely with the better air quality.

According to the World Health Organization, every year, there around 7 million people die from being exposed to fine particles that are in polluted air. Images from NASA show how the COVID-19 shutdown has improved China’s pollution.

The outbreak first broke out from Wuhan, China. The virus is believed to have come from Wuhan’s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which is a trading place for wildlife. On 23 January, to prevent the virus from spreading, the Chinese authorities put the city under lockdown. Some airlines have also suspended their flights to mainland China.

Now, the virus has spread to over 160 countries, infecting over 245,000 people and killing over 10,000. COVID-19 has officially been declared by WHO as a pandemic.
