DRDO Installs Newly-Developed Disinfection Chamber At AIIMS

In the fight against the COVID-19 outbreak, DRDO has installed at AIIMS a disinfection chamber which will help to contain the spread of the virus.

In the fight against the COVID-19 outbreak, DRDO (the Defence Research and Development Organisation) has installed at AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) a disinfection chamber which will help to contain the spread of the virus.

According to a senior DRDO, the newly-developed chamber has been installed to test how it’s working. If it is working properly without any problem, the chamber will be set up depending on the demands of respective organizations.

The walk-through enclosure is for personnel decontamination.

Called Personnel Sanitization Enclosure, the full-body disinfection chamber was developed last week by DRDO along with a face protection mask.

The Ahmednagar-based Vehicle Research and Development Establishment, a laboratory under DRDO was in charge of the designing of the full-body disinfection chamber.

The walk-through enclosure is for personnel decontamination. Each operation is for one person only. The portable system is equipped with soap and sanitizer dispensers.

At the entry of the enclosure, there is a foot pedal once stepped will begin the decontamination process. After a person enters the chamber, a hyposodiumchloride disinfectant mist created by an electrically operated pump.

The mist spray will work for 25 seconds and will stop automatically, ending the operation. A person when standing inside the chamber will need to close their eyes.

The system has a total capacity of 700 liters. Around 650 people can enter the chamber for disinfection until it needs to be refilled.

On the sidewalls, there are glass panels that are see-through for monitoring purposes. The chamber is also equipped with lights for illumination for night time operations. There is also a separate operator cabin for overall operation monitoring.

DRDO built the chamber with the help from Dass Hitachi Ltd in Ghaziabad in four days. The system can be placed at the entry and exit of hospitals, official buildings, malls, etc.
