With more and more number of COVID-19 cases detected in Delhi, there is an urgent demand for hospital beds. Therefore, the Delhi government has decided to convert the Radha Soami Spiritual Centre located in South Delhi into the largest temporary care facility for COVID-19 in the world with 10,000 beds. This facility will use corrugated cardboard beds.
Dhavan Box Sheet containers Pvt Ltd’s director, Vikram Dhavan, says that there is no need to sanitize these beds. While the virus can survive up to five days on wood, plastic, and metal, it can’t last for over 24 hours on cardboard.

The Chhatarpur center is as large as 22 football fields, covering 12,50,000 square feet. CCTV cameras and fans are already installed. Until recently, the authorities used the facility as a shelter for migrant workers. The community kitchens at the center are semi-industrial and are capable of providing meals for thousands of people, according to Radha Soami Satsang Beas’ secretary, Vikas Sethi.
BM Mishra, South Delhi district magistrate, is supervising the work. The capacity of the facility is like that of 20 mini hospitals with 500 beds.

There will be 5 to 10 enclosures in each 500-bed hospital with 50 to 100 beds. 10% of the beds will be equipped with oxygen supply but there will be no ventilator. Critical patients will be moved to super-specialty hospitals.
There will be a pathology laboratory inside the center for testing. At the facility, 400 doctors will be working in two shifts.

The paramilitary and military will assist the center with operations, logistics, medical equipment, logistics, and manpower by providing pathologists, sanitation workers, pharmacists, technicians. The center is expected to be completed by 30 June.
