The SARS-CoV-2 virus causing the COVID-19 pandemic originates from China. Until now, it has affected millions of people, wreaking havoc across the world. China might have gotten rid of the virus but several thousand people living in the northwest region have been infected with a dangerous bacterial disease.
It has been confirmed by the Health Commission of Lanzhou that 3,245 people have tested positive with the bacterial disease brucellosis. The disease originates from livestock or animals carrying the bacteria within their body. No fatality has been reported.

Brucellosis is commonly known as Mediterranean fever or Malta fever. Some of the common symptoms include fever, muscle pain, headache, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, and weight loss. In some cases, the patients also develop cough and stomach pain. The disease is normally treated using antibiotics.
According to the CDC, Brucellosis isn’t really contagious. Human transmission is rare. The patients will become infected after they consuming contaminated food or inhaling bacteria-infected air.
The current outbreak in China is linked to the Zhongmu Lanzhou biological pharmaceutical factory’s leak that happened around July last year. At that time, the facility was producing brucellosis vaccines. However, because of factory workers’ negligence, they were using disinfectants that had already been expired. With this, the waste gas that spread in the region wasn’t filtered properly, leading to everyone breathing the air became infected.

The outbreak broke out in Lanzhou Veterinary Institute first with over 180 cases. The number of cases then started climbing. That is when the Lanzhou Health Commission started stepping in and investigated the situation. The found out that the cause was from the biological pharmaceutical factory.
