An entrepreneur from China just spent one year and around $61,000 to build a 600-square-foot floating mansion. The house is on the coast of Fujian province.
The protagonist is a young entrepreneur who goes by the name “Coastline.” He grew up near the sea in Dongshan County which is a large island in the South China Sea So most of his time was spent fishing and seeing the beautiful sunsets. One night in 2018, Coastline started talking with his friend, Dong Xinmeng, who is an architect, about how great it would be to live in a floating home. And by the end of that night, they decided to turn his dream into a reality.

Dongshan County is known for having aquaculture. Therefore, Coastline and his friend got their inspiration from the large rafts for the mansion. The two planned to live together in the mansion. And since space wasn’t a problem, they decided to go with a 600-square-mansion. At first, they began working on the house at a dock. However, they were having trouble with the tide. So they dragged the platform of the house to the open sea and worked from there.
But that turned out to be problematic than they had thought. The platform wobbled as workers moved on it. And the strong winds made things worse. The structure was built with steel. Although Coastline wanted to use more glass, he understood that he needed to sacrifice looks for reliability and sturdiness.
Coastline and the team of workers worked on the electricity problem for around one year. Originally, they planned to connect the place with a hydropower installation that is nearby. However, the cables were unplugged every time fishing boats passed by. So Coastline had to negotiate with the fishermen so that they could pay attention and would not unplug his cables. The cables stretch for 3km from the house to a dock onshore. However, for one year, they have not been unplugged.

The amazing floating home is built with 16 metal anchors. Each of them weighs around a ton. If Coastline ever wants to move his mansion to another place, he only needs to raise these anchors and use a powerboat to tow the mansion.
The house covers 600 square meters with plenty of outdoor and indoor space. It was completed in 2019. Coastline has been using it as his vacation house where he could fish all day and relax.
The pair named the house Haixi. It is located around 500 meters away from the Dongshan coast. Coastline and Dong Xinmeng spent around $61,000 to build the house.

At first, Coastline and Dong Xinmeng wanted the house for themselves. However, as they shared the photos of the house on social media, their friends started asking if they could come. And words of this beautiful retreat started spreading.
In September 2020, Coastline decided to turn his floating mansion into the first floating hotel in China. He didn’t work with any booking services. He only takes bookings from people who know about the house from his acquaintances.
