India has just had the second fatality of COVID-19, so now the outbreak has claimed two Indian lives.

The victim was a 68-year-old woman from Delhi and she passed away on Friday. It is highly likely that she got the virus from her son, who traveled to Switzerland and Italy last month.

The first fatality was a 79-year-old man after he returned home from a month-long pilgrimage trip to Saudi Arabia in February.

When he arrived at the airport, the man was screened but showed no symptoms whatsoever. When the illness started to be clearer last week, he was taken a hospital where he succumbed to COVID-19 on Tuesday. However, the death was not announced until Thursday.

Health officials are working to trace all the people who have come in contact with the man to put them into quarantine.

Recently, there have been concerns over India’s ability to contain COVID-19 outbreak. However, the health ministry denied all allegations that India was slow in testing for the virus and it was one of the first countries to prepare for the outbreak.

According to RR Gangakhedkar, member of the Indian Council of Medical Research, India’s surveillance system is competent and they can identify anyone with symptoms.

As COVID-19 spreads further in India, the government has declared that hand sanitizers and face masks, including the N-95, two-ply and three-ply variety are essential commodities. This action comes in the time when back marketing of these goods are rampant.
