A woman in Hubei, China, was infected with the coronavirus when she was pregnant, she then gave birth to a healthy boy, who turns out to have antibodies against the virus, according to The Daily Mail. The antibodies are said to have been passed down from the mother.
Xiaoyu, the woman in question, found out that she had COVID-19 though she didn’t show any symptoms. She fully recovered from the disease after a 10-day treatment.
On May 30, she gave birth to her son at the Shenzen Third Hospital. Both the mother and her baby have been discharged from the hospital. The local government posted on social media, saying that Xiaoyu and her son both tested negative for the coronavirus. The mom underwent 6 nucleic acid tests, all of which returned negative results.
The newborn baby didn’t just test negative for the coronavirus, but his screening results also show that he was born with antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Scientists are still debating on whether or not the mother passed on the virus to her baby while being pregnant.
Xiaoyu caught SARS-CoV-2 after her visit to the Wuchang City, Hubei.
Since the COVID-19 broke out in late 2019, the world has recorded cases where pregnant women gave birth to perfectly healthy babies. Besides, there have been very few cases of children infected with the coronavirus in comparison with adults. Until now, scientists have been found a feasible explanation for this difference except for a possibility that the virus may react differently to children.
