Different countries are using different treatments for COVID-19 patients. While plasma therapy is used in India, Israeli doctors are using placenta-based therapy and it seems to be effective.
A recent report suggested that Pluristem Therapeutics Inc. from Israel had helped treat six patients suffering inflammations and acute respiratory failure associated with COVID-19 at three hospitals in a week.
The report further stated that Pluristem Therapeutics grew smart cells using placentas. They were then programmed to produce therapeutic proteins in the patients’ bodies.

After treating seven Israelis, the first American patient underwent placenta-based treatment last week.
All COVID-19 patients received the treatment had high-risk for mortality. There were four patients suffering from kidney and heart failure.
The placenta therapy seemed to be working as it saved all patients. Four experienced an improvement in respiratory conditions. Three were soon to be taken off ventilators while two with preexistent medical conditions started recovering.
Yaky Yanay, CEO and president of the company said that the initial outcome of the placenta-based therapy was promising. Pluristem would try its best to deliver PLX cells to patients in significant need through large-scale manufacturing.

Yanay is confident that this therapy will save lives. The improvement in the health of critically-ill patients would free up space in hospitals’ intensive care units.
The therapy has been deployed in three hospitals in Israel. The number of confirmed cases in the country has reached 14,000 with more than 4,500 recoveries.
Even though placenta therapy seems to be a potential cure for the disease, experts still warn that it should be used carefully before implementing across the nation.
